Frustrations boiled over for the Dallas Stars on Tuesday as the Vegas Golden Knights continued to dominate the Western Conference final with a 4-0 victory in Game 3 to take a commanding 3-0 series lead.

First, Stars forward Jamie Benn was ejected after cross-checking Golden Knights forward Mark Stone. The captain-on-captain crime occurred less than two minutes into the first period with the Stars trailing 1-0. Stone fell to the ice after colliding with Benn, then took a nasty cross-check while down and defenseless.

Benn was also assessed a five-minute major on the play, which the Golden Knights promptly scored on to make it 2-0. The visitors tacked on another shortly after Benn’s penalty expired to establish a three-goal lead before the contest was 10 minutes old.

Benn is likely to have a hearing with the NHL’s department of player safety to determine further discipline. He did not speak to the media after the game.

Golden Knights forward Jonathan Marchessault, who scored the opening goal of Game 3, called Benn’s play “disgusting.”

The rough stuff didn’t stop there, as Max Domi delivered another vicious cross-check on Vegas blueliner Nicolas Hague late in the second period. Domi accumulated four minutes of penalties for his behaviour and was then assessed a 10-minute misconduct.

Dallas fans were not pleased and littered the ice with debris after the fracas.

Stone, who stayed in the game after taking the early hit from Benn, only appeared in 43 regular-season games in 2022-23 before being placed on long-term injured reserve due to a back issue. He returned in time for the beginning of the playoffs and had six goals and nine assists entering Tuesday’s action.

The 31-year-old was at the centre of a debate in the Golden Knights’ second-round series against the Edmonton Oilers when he took several “targeted hits” to his surgically repaired back.
