Teuvo Teravainen, a winger for the Carolina Hurricanes, sustained a broken hand during his team’s 4-3 overtime victory against the New York Islanders on Wednesday, which means he will miss the remainder of the first round. Jean-Gabriel Pageau, an Islanders forward, slashed Teravainen’s hand as he attempted to shoot the puck from the inner half of the left faceoff circle, causing the injury almost immediately. Pageau was not penalized, but Teravainen will undergo surgery on Thursday morning. Hurricanes coach Rod Brind’Amour expressed his frustration with the incident, stating that Pageau had tomahawk chopped Teravainen. This latest setback for the Hurricanes comes after losing Max Pacioretty to a non-contact Achilles injury and Andrei Svechnikov to a knee injury earlier in the season. Despite these losses, the Hurricanes still managed to win the Metropolitan Division and will now have to navigate the first round without Teravainen, one of their top-six forwards.
