Thousands of players have begun their journey to qualify for the U.S. Open, with an 18-hole local qualifier held in the Houston area on Monday and another in North Carolina on Wednesday. However, a few players from LIV Golf, such as Louis Oosthuizen, Bubba Watson, and Patrick Reed, have opted out of the tournament. Players from LIV Golf who have entered include Sergio Garcia, Matthew Wolff, Marc Leishman, and Harold Varner III. The USGA has received a record number of 10,187 entries. The R&A will take the top 50 from the May 22 ranking for the British Open, and the deadline for entering is on June 1. Ryan Gerard and Nicolai Hojgaard of Denmark have accepted special temporary membership on the PGA Tour, allowing them unlimited sponsor exemptions for the remainder of the season. Linn Grant, Sweden’s top player, will not be able to participate in The Chevron Championship in Houston and the International Crown in San Francisco because she has not been vaccinated against COVID-19. During the silly season, the PGA Tour Champions has given approval for a tournament named the World Champions Cup, which merges the Ryder Cup and the Presidents Cup into a single event.
